Among the smaller segments of the dry bulk fleet, handysize and supramax vessels are often mentioned in the same breath, yet they serve different purposes and different cargo profiles. Both segments share one feature that sets them apart from the larger panamax and capesize classes: a significant share of the fleet is geared, meaning the vessel carries its own cargo-handling equipment. For charterers, operators and owners, understanding the practical difference between handysize and supramax, and between geared and gearless tonnage, is central to matching a vessel to a cargo and a berth.

Handysize and supramax: related but distinct

Handysize and supramax bulk carriers sit next to each other on the dry bulk size ladder, with handysize the smaller of the two and supramax (together with its close relative, ultramax) forming a step up in deadweight and cargo capacity. In practice this means supramax vessels can lift more cargo per voyage and often carry a slightly deeper draught, while handysize vessels retain an edge in accessing smaller or shallower ports.

The choice between the two is rarely about one being superior to the other. It depends on the cargo parcel size, the ports involved, and the trade lane. A charterer moving a modest parcel into a river berth with limited draught restrictions will naturally look at handysize tonnage, while a larger parcel destined for a deeper-water terminal may be better suited to a supramax.

What makes a vessel 'geared'

A geared, or self-geared, bulk carrier is fitted with its own cranes or derricks and grabs, allowing it to load and discharge cargo without relying on shore-based equipment. A gearless vessel, by contrast, depends entirely on the terminal's cranes, grabs and conveyor systems to handle cargo. Both handysize and supramax segments include a substantial proportion of geared tonnage, which is one reason these size classes are so widely used across a broad range of trades and ports.

Handysize: flexibility at the smaller end

The strength of the handysize segment lies in its flexibility. These vessels are commonly geared, sized to fit a wide range of berths, and able to serve ports that lack the infrastructure to load or discharge cargo independently. This makes handysize tonnage a natural fit for minor bulk trades, regional distribution, and routes calling at ports with limited shore-side equipment.

Because handysize vessels can often self-load and self-discharge, they open up port options that would otherwise be closed to larger, gearless tonnage. For charterers working with smaller parcels or less developed port infrastructure, this operational reach is frequently as important as the freight rate itself.

Supramax: bridging size and reach

Supramax vessels occupy a middle ground: large enough to carry meaningful cargo volumes economically, yet still commonly built with gear that preserves much of the port flexibility associated with the handysize class. This combination has made supramax one of the most actively traded segments in dry bulk, suited to major bulk commodities as well as a wide range of minor bulk parcels.

The gearless share of the supramax fleet tends to serve routes between well-equipped terminals, where shore cranes are reliable and efficient, and where the extra deadweight freed up by omitting gear can be put to commercial use. Choosing between a geared and gearless supramax is therefore as much a question of port infrastructure along the intended route as one of vessel availability.

Why self-geared chartering still matters

For charterers, self-geared tonnage reduces dependency on terminal equipment and berth congestion, which can be particularly valuable on routes where shore cranes are older, less reliable, or simply absent. It also supports operational contingency: if a terminal's own equipment breaks down, a geared vessel can often continue cargo operations using its own cranes, subject to the terminal's own procedures and safety requirements.

This is not a universal advantage. Geared vessels typically sacrifice some cargo intake to the weight and space of their own equipment, and gear maintenance and crew familiarity are additional factors an owner must manage. Commercial practice varies across trades and charterparties, so the specific allocation of responsibility for gear performance is always worth checking against the terms agreed.

Matching the vessel to the trade

In practice, the decision between handysize and supramax, and between geared and gearless tonnage within each class, comes down to the specifics of the cargo, the port pair and the commercial structure of the fixture, whether voyage or time charter. A broker's role is to weigh these factors together with current tonnage availability and present options that fit the trade rather than a generic preference for one size or configuration.
